Featuring

Author

Matthew Guinn

For his Thacker appearance, Matthew will read from his novel-in-progress, The Skinning Shed. The plot involves shady dealings – and characters –  in the Mississippi timber industry.

Readers are familiar with Guinn’s most recent novel, the literary thriller, The Scribe (Norton). The book takes place during the 1881 International Cotton Exposition in Atlanta. Disgraced former detective Thomas Canby is called back to the city to track a serial murderer who seems to be targeting the city’s wealthiest black entrepreneurs. Canby is aided in his task by pious, prim Cyrus Underwood, Atlanta’s first duly authorized constable of color.

They soon find that there’s far more to the gory series of murders than meets the eye, as white corpses, each with foreheads bearing bloody single letters, join the black ones in what another character likens to an accursed “spelling bee.”

“A heady mix of history, sizzle, punch, and danger.” – Steve Berry

Guinn’s previous books are the novel, The Resurrectionist and a book of literary criticism, After Southern Modernism: Fiction of the Contemporary South.

A native of Atlanta, Matthew Guinn earned a BA in English from the University of Georgia. At the University of South Carolina, where he earned a Ph.D. in English, he was personal assistant to the late James Dickey.

Matthew is currently an Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Belhaven University in Jackson, MS. He and his wife, Kristen, live in Jackson with their two children, Braiden and Phoebe.

Music

TB Ledford and the Accumulators featuring the Ledford Girls

TB Ledford and the Accumulators is led by Tommy Bryan Ledford, a journeyman musician (guitar, banjo, singer/songwriter) who was born in the Mississippi Delta and raised in the piney hills of Louisiana. Following his move to Lafayette County, MS he played with such bands as the Sincere Ramblers, the Kudzu Kings, and the Taylor Grocery Band. In 1997, he helped co-found The Thacker Mountain Radio Hour.

Besides Ledford on guitar the Accumulators include Austin Sorey (bass) and Matthew Magee (fiddle). The group also includes Ledford’s daughters: Lila Ledford on guitar, Lucy Ledford on fiddle and Ava Ledford on fiddle.

Ledford’s CDs include Butcher Bird, The Taylor Grocery Band and A Sincere Ramblers Christmas. He and his wife, Leah, live in Jackson, MS with their four daughters.

Damein Wash

Damein Wash is a dynamic vocalist/keyboardist from Oxford, Mississippi. For his Livingston appearance, Wash will lead an eight-piece Soul Revue band complete with horn section. Wash and his group will showcase their love of classic rhythm and blues from Memphis, Motown and beyond.

An avid performer, Wash has taken Mississippi music across the United States. He also writes scores for television and film, including arranging and conducting “Deep South Gospel” for Sony’s Moonshine Recording, which was featured on the national television show, American Gods. His recent work includes directing a concert of protest songs for Oxford’s Burns Belfry Museum, performing a Mississippi Gospel Blues concert in France and Germany, and assembling a Mississippi soul singer tribute for the Governor’s Concert at the Bicentennial Celebration North.

Wash is also the lead vocalist and arranger for the Soul Tones, a veteran R&B soul band based in Oxford.
