Live from Delta State University! Food writer Susan Puckett and roots/gospel singer Buddy Greene plus soul band Ol’ Skool Revue

The Thacker Mountain Radio Hour returns to Delta State University Saturday, March 4 at 3 p.m. at the Delta Music Institute’s Studio A in the Whitfield Building on the DSU campus in Cleveland, Miss. (Highway 8 West, Cleveland, MS 38733). Admission is FREE. The show is part of fund-raising events for DMI programming and the Duff Dorrough Memorial Scholarship Fund. A table will be set up for donations.

Guests will include food journalist Susan Puckett, roots/gospel singer Buddy Greene, plus DMI student band, Ol Skool Revue and DMI Director Tricia Walker. The show is hosted by Jim Dees and Thacker house band, the Yalobushwhackers.

Susan Puckett

Susan Puckett’s book is Eat Drink Delta: A Hungry Traveler’s Journey through the Soul of the South, (Univ. of Georgia Press). Dubbed the “recipe of a place,” the book describes the ultimate road trip across the Mississippi Delta. Food journalist Puckett begins with BBQ in Memphis and heads south to the catfish of Humphreys County, the “Kool Aid pickles” of Indianola, the fried okra at the Blue Levee in Rosedale, to mysteries of Lusco’s, to the white columns and tomato sandwiches of Vicksburg. The book also includes photographs by noted Delta photographer, Langdon Clay. Susan Puckett is a native of Jackson, Mississippi, and a graduate of the University of Mississippi. She was the food editor at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution for eighteen years and has written for many national food and culture magazines. She lives in Atlanta.

Buddy Greene

Rootsy southern gospel artist Buddy Greene brings a wide variety of Americana influences to his music to create a unique hybrid of country, bluegrass, folk, and gospel. His latest CD is Someday. His previous CDs include A Few More Years and Happy Man. His 1990 album Sojourner’s Song, won the 1991 Dove Award (the gospel equivalent of the Grammys) for Best Country Album. His collaboration with Mark Lowry, “Mary Did You Know?” is considered a modern-day Christmas standard.

Greene is a virtuoso on the harmonica, and has played a classical set at Carnegie Hall. He recorded many harmonica classics for his 2011 Harmonica Anthology album. He is currently finishing up a bluegrass album with mandolinist Sam Bush.

Ol' Skool Revue

Ol’ Skool Revue is a group of students and faculty from the Delta Music Institute of Delta State University. The ensemble specializes in classic soul, funk and R&B from Motown to Memphis. The group performs at various venues around the country including the Chicago Blues Festival. Students in the Revue can earn a B.S. degree in Music Industry Studies from DMI.
